The premiere date for Krapopolis, an animated series created by Dan Harmon, co-creator of Rick and Morty, and backed by blockchain technology, has been announced as September 24, 2023.
Krapopolis, the inaugural venture from Blockchain Creative Labs, the media and creative tech division of Fox Entertainment, aims to “shape the future of content creation, distribution, and monetization” by utilizing blockchain technology to connect creators and communities.
Krapopolis is set in the mythical ancient Greece and revolves around a flawed family consisting of humans, gods, and monsters. Their goal is to govern one of the world’s earliest cities without resorting to violence against each other. Starting from August 2022, enthusiasts have had the opportunity to acquire Krap Chickens, a collection of 10,420 NFTs, which initially offered vague access to show-related content. However, it has now been revealed that these digital assets not only grant holders access to behind-the-scenes materials but also provide them with exclusive opportunities, including attendance at in-person events, the ability to vote on the show’s direction, and the option to purchase associated merchandise. Adding an innovative touch, viewers can actively engage with the series through the Krapopolis Krap Chicken Fan Pass NFT, allowing for interactive participation.
Krapopolis was unveiled in Spring 2021, a time when the NFT market was experiencing significant growth. However, the collaboration between Harmon and Fox to create a blockchain-driven animated series had been established in the summer of 2020. Despite the eventual downturn in the NFT market, Fox displayed confidence in the project by investing a substantial $100 million into its Web3 division. Demonstrating an extraordinary level of support for the original intellectual property, Fox granted approval for three seasons of Krapopolis even before the premiere of a single episode.
Krapopolis, created by Blockchain Creative Labs and Fox Entertainment, introduces an intriguing paradigm that merges fan engagement, content creation, and distribution. Their objective is to shift viewers from passive consumers to active participants, ushering in a potential revolution in how content is created and consumed. While the impact of this innovative approach remains to be witnessed, the anticipation surrounding the premiere is undeniably palpable.
